Dr. Marlen Elliot Harrison has been teaching composition, communication, language (TESOL), literature, and social science research methods both online and at international universities in Asia, Europe, and North America since 1997. As such he is a transdisciplinarian who is as much at home in the worlds of professional and first year writing as he is in digital pedagogy and language teaching. Having taught students in over 50 different academic programs at no less than 15 different universities across 6 countries and three continents, and with 70+ international academic presentations – including TESOL, EuroCALL, JALT, AAAL, ASA, AAA and CCCC – and 30+ international academic publications – including manuscripts in the peer-reviewed journals Qualitative Research in Psychology (USA), Language Learning in Higher Education (UK), Writing on the Edge (USA), Reflections on English Language Teaching (Singapore), CALL-EJ (Australia), and The Language Teacher (Japan) – his current research interests include peer mentorship in online education; writing as a tool for critical reflective practice; project-based learning in the professional writing classroom; and autoethnographic approaches to research in English Language Arts.
After years of classroom experience, in 2015 Dr. Harrison also began teaching in a number of online graduate programs. At Southern New Hampshire University he taught the MA English “Thesis/Capstone in English” and “Theory and Teaching of Composition” courses while also coaching and assessing other instructors in his role as Team Lead. In 2016, he began designing and teaching courses such as “Educational Leadership”, “Education & Diversity”, and “Assessment in Higher Education” while also developing curriculum as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in the online M.Ed. program at Tiffin University. In 2017, he began teaching for the online graduate certificate program in composition at Indiana University East, designing and delivering courses such as “Contemporary Literacies“, “Practicum in Composition“, and “Composition Theory“. In 2018, he joined the University of Philosophical Research, synthesizing his experiences as a therapist and instructor to design and deliver online graduate courses such as “Creativity and Healing” in the MA program in Transformational Psychology. He is currently a visiting instructor in the undergraduate Writing Program at Florida International University.
Dr. Harrison is the recipient of numerous research and educational grants/fellowships; a Best of JALT (Japan, 2006) award; and international grants/honoraria from universities in Canada, Japan, Finland, Denmark, and Belgium (Erasmus). In 2010, his development and planning of the 1st Symposium on Gender & Sexuality at Indiana University of Pennsylvania earned him the President’s GLBT Commission Award for service to the campus community. In 2015, he was contracted to organize a group of international scholars to assist in the curation of a collaborative online exhibit for Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, National Postal Museum and the US Postal service. In 2018, he was awarded a prestigious English Language Fellowship from the US State Department to undertake teaching and curriculum development at the national university in Tirana, Albania. Marlen regularly serves as a text evaluator of Barron’s English language exam prep materials and as a scorer for the International Baccalaureate program’s English Language and Literature exams.
As a journalist and professional writer, Dr. Harrison was Managing Editor of the Fragrantica.com family of websites (a magazine and database dedicated to fragrance and olfaction read by over 12 million viewers a month and published in 17 different languages) where he worked with a staff of more than 20 international, multilingual writers. Dr. Harrison has also been featured in or contributed to The Washington Blade, MensJournal.com, MensFitness.com, Playboy.com, Forbes.com, NYTimes.com, WSJ.com (Wall Street Journal), Perfumer & Flavorist, and international publications such as Finland’s Anna and Viva magazines, Canada’s Glow magazine, and Spain’s El País. His self-created, online magazines Scenteur7, PerfumeCritic.com (2006-2010)/ThePerfumeCritic.com (2011-2012) and work in the beauty industry have earned him international recognition and invitations to speak at events such as the 2008 Symposium of the American Society of Perfumers in NYC and the 2016 Esxence exhibition in Milan.
Having earned a PhD in writing and language teaching from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Harrison also earned an MA in education and human development (counseling) from The George Washington University and a BS (Honors) in psychology from Appalachian State University. He has worked in public and mental health at institutions such as the Psychiatric Institute of Washington (DC), Johns Hopkins Hospital, and the North Baltimore Center.
